Plug-ins are in use almost every day in any music production. What's your go-to plug-in? What's the oddest use you've put a plug-in into effect? E-mail the staff at mixeditorial@mixonline.com.
As the AES convention in San Francisco approaches, we thought we’d give Mix readers a sneak peak of some of the new products launching at the show.
Making its U.S. debut at AES is the Allen & Heath GS-R24, a high-quality analog recording console featuring a choice of analog and digital interface modules, motorized faders for automated mixing and MIDI controllers for tactile interfacing with software DAWs.
Based on the highly successful ZED-R16 FireWire recording mixer concept with influences from the classic GS3000, the GS-R24 is primarily aimed at project recording studios, although its feature set lends the mixer to post-production suites and live sound applications requiring multichannel recording.
Each of the 24 mono mic/line input channels has a high-quality mic preamp and 4-band fully parametric EQ. Also standard are two dual-input stereo channels, two mono tube preamp channels, six auxes (two pre/post-EQ switchable), four subgroup buses, a master stereo and a master mono bus. The GS-R24 also offers two studio output submix sections with individual level adjustment, and a comprehensive PFL/AFL and stereo “Solo In Place” system.
A rear panel slot provides optional input and output formats via a choice of plug-in interface module cards. The first module available is a 32-channel FireWire interface with ADAT optical connectivity, which provides a digital send and digital return on all the input channels (mono, stereo and valve pre) and the master stereo, making a total of 32 digital inputs and outputs. Also available from launch will be an analog I/O-plus-MIDI module with the interface on D-type connectors for wiring to external converters.
The MIDI control section provides 24 channel faders (audio and MIDI track), 26 Select switches (dual-function channel solo switches), 12 rotaries, 19 MIDI switches, two MIDI faders and a jog wheel for scrolling functions. Depending on the model, the mono channels have motorized or non-motor faders, while mode switches can configure the mixer to allow different levels of MIDI control and DAW integration.
The GS-R24 is slated to begin shipping in December.
Visit Allen & Heath at AES booth #1230 in San Francisco from November 5 to 7, 2010.
