Making its U.S. AES debut is the Schoeps SuperCMIT digital shotgun microphone. Based on the highly successful Schoeps CMIT, the SuperCMIT uses a unique dual-capsule design and approach to minimizing extraneous noise, increasing range and retaining the transparency and integrity of the source audio. The SuperCMIT has a dual output signal, coupled with digital signal processing for excellent noise diffusion and pristine transparency.
Additionally, the microphone features a low-frequency roll-off switch, high-frequency gain switch and increased directivity switch for maximizing range. The SuperCMIT is equally at home on a boompole or pistol grip mount, and is well suited for ENG/EFP, broadcast applications, audio for video and motion picture, sound design applications and more.
The SuperCMIT is a digital microphone, outputting signals in AES42, Mode 1 format. It runs on its own clock (48 kHz) and must be driven by an AES42 input with a sample rate converter. With the optional PSD 2U powering adapter, it can also be used with a conventional AES3 input having built-in SRC. The AES42 standard defines the interface for digital mics. In the simplest case, AES42 requires only an AES-3 interface and 10-volt digital phantom powering. Some products include AES42 interfaces, such as RME’s DMC-842 8-channel interface and Sound Devices’ 788T portable 8-channel recorder.
The SuperCMIT is designed to be a problem-solver wherever diffuse sources of noise (such as street noise, wind noise, room sound, or audience and passers-by) might interfere with a recording. Unwanted noise is greatly reduced in level—even at low frequencies—without altering the tonal color of direct sounds arriving at the front of the mic. This occurs from onboard DSP in the SuperCMIT that recognizes sound energy arriving from various directions and determines whether that sound has a discrete, persistent direction of arrival or not. This information is used to suppress diffuse sound and focus on discrete sound, thus extending the mic’s “reach,” without the usual sound-coloring artifacts.
The SuperCMIT digital shotgun microphone is currently shipping and available for delivery. The mic includes a wooden case, foam-type windscreen and a 2U W 170 stand clamp with swivel. Optional accessories include a basket-type windscreen, WSR CMIT U-grip mount/handle and an external PSD 2 U powering box for supplying 10V digital phantom powering.
Visit Schoeps at AES booth #932 in San Francisco from November 5 to 7, 2010.
