Pianist Michel Camilo triumphantly returns to the jazz-trio format for the first time since 2003 with Spirit of the Moment, his sixteenth career release. Camilo formed a new trio for this project, reuniting with bassist Charles Flores and adding drummer Dafnis Prieto. Their powerful chemistry and intuitive interplay results in an inspired, inventive and sophisticated mixture of trad jazz, Afro-Caribbean, funk, blues and European classical influences. Spirit of the Moment presents Camilo’s latest compositions (which offer a variety of moods, from beautiful ballads to burning uptempo numbers) alongside the trio’s fresh interpretations of “Nefertiti” (Wayne Shorter), “Nardis” (Miles Davis and Bill Evans), “Giant Steps” (John Coltrane) and “Solar (Explorations)” (Davis). This trio is a magic combination, and I hope that Camilo will record with Flores and Prieto again in the future.
