Frankfurt, Germany’s Musikmesse (March 21-24, 2011) is a musician’s Mecca that everyone in the music production industry should experience at least once in his/her lifetime. It is by far the world’s biggest show for musical instruments, live music production and even the music business, dwarfing other tradeshows here in the U.S. Held annually for more than 25 years, the show is so expansive that it takes each of the four days that the show takes place just to see most of what you want to see, but even then you’re moving at a fevered pace to do so. ...

Just last summer, we covered a ton of hot new plug-in debuts in our July issue and figured that would hold back the tide for perhaps another year. In fact, our prediction wasn’t even close—in the past few months alone, a couple dozen cool new effects plug-ins have come to market and we couldn’t wait to spotlight some of these new entries. Here, listed alphabetically, are a few recent plugs that are just the thing for in-the-box mixing and production. And if you’re interested in checking these out firsthand, most are available in downloadable demo versions from the Websites listed.

This 2011 Winter NAMM show (held January 13-16, Anaheim, Calif.) was a record-setting event, with 90,114 registered attendees checking out 1,417 exhibitors in the Anaheim Convention Center. There was plenty of new gear and choosing the Mix Certified Hits (our choices for the show’s Top 20 products) proved particularly difficult. Listed here, alphabetically, are our selections.

Lansing unveiled the Lansing Iconic—the world’s first recording studio monitor—he probably had no idea that nearly three-quarters of a century later, that original notion would have developed into an industry of its own, with dozens of companies creating reproduction systems for the control room environment. Today, that quest for sonic perfection continues with higher-power, more accurate monitors designed for near- and midfield listening. In the past 18 months, we’ve seen an increase in new models—some three dozen in this report alone—intended for studio applications.

Lehmannaudio's StudioCube ($499) headphone amp is compact, comes with stand (optional) or desk mount, and is linkable for daisy-chaining multiple units. I/O is on Neutrik ¼-inch TRS headphone outputs and Neutrik XLR/TRS stereo input/thrus. Features include mono/stereo input selector switches, and front panel LEDs to monitor input signal presence and overload. The output is Class-A, and all units are crafted with selected components in Germany.
