Out on a world tour that will visit Japan, Australia and Europe, Elvis Costello played an impeccable-sounding show at the San Francisco Bay Area's Berkeley Community Theater in May. Backed by The Imposters — keyboardist Steve Nieve, drummer Pete Thomas and bassist Davey Faragher — Costello tore through a generous set that included many fan favorites, as well as new material from his latest CD, When I Was Cruel.
FOH engineer Jeffrey Hooper mixed on a Midas XL4 console and patched into Summit compressors for vocals, dbx 160XTs compressor/limiters on keyboards and Drawmer gates on drums, plus three Yamaha SPX990s for reverbs. Mic choices were similarly “old-school”: a Shure 58a for vocals, a Shure SM91 for kick, an SM57 for snare, an AKG 451 for hi-hat, Sennheiser 609s on toms and AKG 414s for overheads. Guitar amp mics were Sennheiser 509s plus a DI for the acoustic. Sound Image provided the JBL VerTec line array P.A.
