Australian singer/slide guitarist Kara Grainger has been busy tracking her debut solo album for Craving Records at The Village (West L.A.) with producer/instrumentalist David Kalish (Rickie Lee Jones). Backing Grainger, who has been compared to Bonnie Raitt, is an all-star line-up of L.A.-based musicians who have played with artists such as Jackson Browne, Stevie Wonder and John Hiatt. Engineer Mark Johnson was at the Neve 8048 console in The Village's Studio A.

Walter Becker of Steely Dan was at The Village with producer Larry Klein, tracking vocals for the follow-up to his 1994 solo debut. Dan Marnien engineered the sessions, which took place in Studio F, which is equipped with a Digidesign ICON. The album is reportedly scheduled for release by Warner Bros. Records.

Also in Studio F was Mos Def, mixing an upcoming release on Geffen with engineer Duro. Producer/engineer Noah Georgeson was also in Studio F this month mixing "Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend," preformed by Devandra Banhart. Georgeson also oversaw the tracking sessions, which took place in Studio A.

Meanwhile, in the Neve VR console–equipped Studio B, Judith Owen overdubbed vocals with guest singer k.d. lang for Owen's upcoming self-produced release. Ghian Wright engineered the vocal sessions.
