Mix Presents Sound for Film: And the Award Goes To…

The Martian

Ridley Scott turned to the A-list British sound team: Oliver Tarney, who worked with Paul Greengrass on United 93 and Captain Phillips, both nominated for BAFTAs and the latter garnering an Oscar nomination; and re-recording mixers Paul Massey (who worked with Scott on Robin Hood) and Mark Taylor (who worked with Scott on Exodus: Gods and Kings and Tarney on Captain Phillips). Lots of connections. This time they have all the awards-favorites sounds of space, with ambiences inside helmets and odd environments, storms on distant planets, the cacophony of Mission Control, and lots of quiet moments, as we follow Matt Damon through his rush to be rescued. This is a solid sound job from an action-veteran crew. Look for a couple of nominations if the Academy hasn’t grown tired of space movies.
