The BBC in London has placed an order for a Solid State Logic C200 Digital Production Console, which will be installed in the refurbished Radio Theatre within the BBC Broadcasting House.

The refurbishment of the Radio Theatre is part of The New Broadcasting House Project, which involves the redevelopment of BBC Broadcasting House to create a new headquarters for the BBC in central London. The project aims to create an inspirational and creative centre for the BBC of the 21st century, as well as a new landmark for central London.

It is the largest capital project ever undertaken by the BBC and will culminate in the opening of an 80,000-square-meter structure that will provide state of the art production and broadcast facilities for staff in BBC Radio & Music, BBC News and BBC World Service and will be the hub of the BBC’s national and international live output.

The 64-fader SSL C200 digital production console will be delivered next spring and installed in the Radio Theatre, which is at the heart of the original Broadcasting House building. This theatre has an audience capacity of up to 300 and forms the most significant audience venue within the W1 site.

The refurbishment of the Radio Theatre will provide improved audience facilities and technology that fits into the wholly digital infrastructure of the BBC’s W1 site. The C200 digital production console will operate as part of an integrated technical system, delivering a wide variety of different shows. When it re-opens in 2006, it will be used by BBC Radio & Music to produce a wide variety of programs, including Radio Light Entertainment shows, such as “The News Quiz” and “Dead Ringers,” and musical performances ranging from classical to rock & pop ‘Live & Exclusive’ shows. Recent Live & Exclusive shows in the theatre have included Ronan Keating, Status Quo, George Michael, Sting and Big Band Sessions.

Although major construction work has taken place in the Theatre, largely to make it accessible by disabled audience members, the area will retain its listed Art Deco interior.
