At Berklee College of Music’s 2006 commencement on Saturday, May 13, Grammy-winning record producer Elliot Scheiner (Steely Dan, Van Morrison, the Eagles) will receive an honorary doctor of music degree, joining the ranks of past recipients Duke Ellington, Steven Tyler, Quincy Jones, and Bonnie Raitt. Scheiner’s son, Matt, will graduate from Berklee with a degree in music production and engineering.
Elliot Scheiner, singer/songwriter and Berklee alumna Melissa Etheridge, Aretha Franklin and internationally renowned saxophonist and educator Andy McGhee will be presented with honorary doctorates before more than 800 graduates and their invited guests at the ceremony in the 4,000-seat Matthews Arena at Northeastern University.
“I had been doing workshops at Berklee long before Matt was thinking about a career in music, so my opinion of the college was always very high,” says Scheiner. “His four years there have only reinforced my position on the school. The teachers made a living prior to Berklee, and the best assistants I’ve had were Berklee graduates.”
“After graduating I’m going to try to become a rock star,” says Matt Scheiner, who sings and plays guitar in his own band. “But if it doesn’t happen I’m going straight to work for my dad. Since I was young I assumed I would carry on the family business.”
