On Tuesday, April 26, the Recording Academy Memphis Chapter and the P&E Wing presented the latest Grammy Pro Studio Summit at Esplanade Studios in New Orleans. More than 200 recording professionals attended the summit, and it was hailed as a success by all who participated.
The day began with opening remarks from the honorary event chair, P&E Wing co-founder and multi Grammy Award–winning engineer Elliot Scheiner. Guests then enjoyed a candid and lively keynote discussion with legendary engineer Geoff Emerick (The Beatles, America, Cheap Trick, Elvis Costello), who shared insights from his long career, along with anecdotes about his experiences recording the Beatles and his decision-making process in helping to create their signature sound. Next, Memphis Chapter P&E Wing co-chair Chris Bell moderated a panel dubbed “Demystifying Mastering,” featuring Eric Boulanger, Michael Romanowski and Jonathan Wyner.
The program concluded with a discussion about the life, music and legacy of the late New Orleans native Allen Toussaint, with a focus on his work in the studio and recording with different artists. Panelists included legendary NOLA-based musicians Gary Brown, Danny Jones, Leo Nocentelli and Reginald Toussaint, and recording engineer Roberta Grace with the discussion moderated by New Orleans-based journalist/musician/producer Ben Sandmel.
Representatives from Adam Audio, PreSonus and Rupert Neve Designs were on-site to demonstrate their latest gear, and ELS Studio Premium Audio hosted the post-event reception, which featured a traditional Louisiana style crawfish boil and listening demonstrations of the Elliot Scheiner-designed audio system featured in the fleet of Acura luxury vehicles.
