Nashville, TN — Celebrated multi-Grammy Award winning artist Lucinda Williams received a special honor on Saturday, May 13 when she was awarded an honorary degree from the esteemed Berklee College of Music in a ceremony that took place at Boston University’s Agganis Arena. Williams received the honorary doctorate for her musical achievements and pioneering influence through her nearly four-decade career.
Williams said of the experience, “As someone whose life has been dedicated to writing and playing music—and the long path of continuing to try to master both crafts—being honored by an institution that helps others find their way to a life in music is the truest honor of all”.
Williams received the honor in great company as Lionel Richie, Todd Rundgren, NARAS President Neil Portnow and Korean musician/producer Shin Joong Hyun were also recognized for their achievements with honorary doctorates. Past recipients include Duke Ellington (the first, in 1971), Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Smokey Robinson, Loretta Lynn, Juan Luis Guerra, Annie Lennox, Paco de Lucia, Carole King, Willie Nelson, Alison Krauss, George Clinton, Rita Moreno, Julio Iglesias, Plácido Domingo, and A.R. Rahman.
At 64, Lucinda Williams’ songs are as genuine and soulful as when she began writing. Her introspective lyrics and honest vocals continue to connect with fans worldwide as she is in the middle of the most prolific period of her career.
