Oscar Sound Nominations 2016

On January 14, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 88th annual Academy Awards, honoring movies released in 2015. The 88th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center. Comedian Chris Rock will host the 2016 Academy Awards when it airs live on Sunday, February 28 on ABC; it will mark his first time hosting the telecast since 2005.

The nominee lists for the Sound Editing and Sound Mixing categories were virtually identical, with four films nominated for both awards. Mix magazine congratulates the following nominees in each category:

Mad Max: Fury Road

Mark Mangini and David White

This marks Mangini’s fourth nomination and White’s first.

The Martian

Oliver Tarney

This is Tarney’s second career nomination.

The Revenant

Martin Hernandez and Lon Bender

The film marks Hernandez’s second nomination, and the fourth for Bender, who previously won Sound Effects Editing for Braveheart (1995).

Sicario

Alan Robert Murray

Murray has been nominated eight times over his career and won the Sound Editing category twice for American Sniper (2014) and Letters From Iwo Jima (2006).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Matthew Wood and David Acord

This marks the third Academy Award nomination for Wood and first for Acord.

Jon Taylor, Frank A. Montaño, Randy Thom and Chris Duesterdiek

This is the third nomination for Taylor; eighth nomination for Montaño; first nomination for Duesterdiek; and fifteenth nomination for Randy Thom, who previously won the Sound Editing Oscar for The Incredibles (2004) and Sound Oscar for The Right Stuff (1983).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Andy Nelson, Christopher Scarabosio and Stuart Wilson

Including his nomination this year for Sound Mixing for Bridge Of Spies, this is the twentieth nomination for Andy Nelson, who previously won the Sound Mixing Oscar for Les Misérables (2012) and the Sound Oscar for Saving Private Ryan (1998). In addition, it’s the second nomination for Christopher Scarabosio and third for Stuart Wilson.

Bridge of Spies

Andy Nelson, Gary Rydstrom and Drew Kunin

This is the second nomination for Drew Kunin, and Nelson is also nominated for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It is also the eighteenth nomination for Rydstrom, who has won seven times, garnering both Sound and Sound Effects Editing Oscars for Saving Private Ryan (1998), Jurassic Park (1993) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) , and the Sound Oscar for Titanic (1997).

Mad Max: Fury Road

Chris Jenkins, Gregg Rudloff and Ben Osmo

This is the fifth Academy Award nomination for Jenkins, who previously won the Sound Oscars for The Last Of The Mohicans (1992) and Out Of Africa (1985). Meanwhile this marks the seventh nomination for Gregg Rudloff, who previously won Sound Oscars for The Matrix (1999) and Glory (1989). Finally, it is the first Academy Award nomination for Ben Osmo.

The Martian

Paul Massey, Mark Taylor and Mac Ruth

This is Massey’s seventh Academy Award nomination, Taylor’s second and the first for Ruth.
