Anand Studios in Mumbai, India, Takes Box Office by Storm

Euphonix in Palo Alto, Calif., congratulates Anand Recording Private Limited for its talented work on the Hindi blockbuster movie Ghajini. The film was mixed entirely on a Euphonix System 5 at Anand’s Mumbai-based post-production facility, earned $30 million in its first week of release. This figure is said to set a box office record for a Bollywood film.

Additionally, A.R. Rahman (also a Euphonix System 5 owner) composed the movie’s original soundtrack. Rahman has been nominated for three Academy Awards and a BAFTA. Rahman won a Golden Globe award for his soundtrack on the internationally acclaimed film, Slumdog Millionaire.

“Being that Ghajini was an action film, it required a very complex soundtrack,” explains Anand film mix engineer Anup Dev. “I had to build a highly flexible mix setup that could be routed in any way I wanted. With the Euphonix it was very easy to do that, yet still modify and update the setup as required without sacrificing any setups. Euphonix’ ability to store multiple complex mixes also allowed the film’s director to keep his options open as long as possible. Overall, I had the full flexibility of a film mix console in a single user configuration. After working on Euphonix System 5, I cannot imagine anything else.”

Anand Studios is equipped with a state-of-the-art Euphonix System 5 digital audio mixing console specifically configured for motion picture mixing. The single operator System 5 is a dual core, 154-channel system with 56 faders and is outfitted with a film-style monitoring panel that includes PEC-direct switching and joysticks.

Last year Anand Studios also enjoyed international success when the film Taare Zameen Par, also mixed on the Euphonix System 5, was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Film category. Subsequently, the Walt Disney Company purchased the film’s home video rights for distribution in North America, the UK and Australia, making it the first time an international studio has bought the video rights of an Indian film.

Originally built in 1986, Anand Recording is a professional motion picture sound post-production facility specializing in ADR/Foley, voice-overs, dubbing and surround mixes. More than 3,000 feature films have been mixed at Anand, including several Hollywood productions that were dubbed into several international languages. Indian Bollywood actor and film producer Dev Anand owns Anand Recording.
