The Living Room Music Venue in New York City Announces Relocation

The Living Room, a music venue at the forefront of New York City’s singer-songwriter scene, will close its location at 154 Ludlow Street after 10 years and will relocate to a downtown Manhattan location in the spring of 2013. The current lease will expire on January 31, 2013.

Organizers are planning a weeklong celebration honoring the space for January 20 to 26; artists will be announced.

Founder Jennifer Gilson has announced a PledgeMusic campaign to cover relocation costs, with some of the proceeds going to Musicians On Call, an organization that brings live and recorded music to patients in healthcare facilities.

“Playing at The Living Room was an experience that greatly affected me starting out as a musician in NYC and it continues to be one of my favorite places to hear live music,” says Norah Jones.

In 1997, Gilson transformed a fried chicken shack on Allen Street before relocating to Ludlow Street in 2003. The Living Room has opened its doors to Norah Jones, Martha Wainwright, Chris Thile, Ron Sexsmith, Joseph Arthur, Nellie McKay, Glen Hansard, Ingrid Michaelson, the Lumineers, Conor Oberst, and others.

The venue quickly became a “real social scene with musicians and artists and likeminded people hanging out before and after gigs,” remembers Steve Rosenthal, Jennifer’s husband and partner. A three-time Grammy Award–winning producer and engineer, Rosenthal is the founder of the Magic Shop recording studio and designed the sound and layout for the Ludlow space. Named one of North America’s 40 Best Venues by Paste magazine, The Living Room hosts a biweekly broadcast series on Sirius XM, “From the Living Room to the Loft.”

“Although this space holds the memories of innumerable great performances, I’m really excited to bring the spirit of The Living Room to a new location with fresh energy, fantastic sound and talented artists—old and new,” Gilson says.
