At the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards Ceremony held Saturday, February 7, in Los Angeles, the evening before the 51st Grammy Awards, the 2009 Technical Grammy Awards were awarded to Clarence “Leo” Fender and Universal Audio.

Recording Academy Producers & Engineers Wing former Co-chair Bob Ludwig presented the 2009 Technical Grammy Award to Universal Audio CEO Bill Putnam Jr., while Phyllis Fender accepted the  2009 Technical Grammy Award on behalf of Clarence “Leo” Fender from the Recording Academy Producers & Engineers Wing Co-chair Glenn Lorbecki.

This prestigious award is presented annually by vote of The Recording Academy Producers & Engineers Wing Advisory Council and Chapter committees to individuals and/or companies who have made contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording field. Previous Technical Grammy Award Recipients have included Ray Dolby, George Massenburg, Les Paul, Phil Ramone, Geoff Emerick, AMS Neve, Apple Computer, JBL Professional and Shure, Inc.

Currently, 6,000 professionals comprise the Producers & Engineers Wing, which was established for producers, engineers, remixers, manufacturers, technologists, and other related creative and technical professionals in the recording community. This organized voice for the recording community addresses issues that affect the craft of recorded music, while ensuring its role in the development of new technologies, recording and mastering recommendations, and archiving and preservation initiatives.
