Northern Lights, an award-winning editorial and post-production service in New York City, has launched an audio division and hired mixer/sound designer/composer Ted Gannon (pictured). Gannon is launching into a commercial campaign for Centrum, episodic promos for USA Network’s Law & Order, and a game opener for the NHL in conjunction with VFX and design company Mr. Wonderful.

“Our clients have been asking for audio services for some time now,” says Northern Lights partner Mark Littman. “We felt it was the right time and right fit to do so with Ted. Similar to our philosophy with Mr. Wonderful, each additional aspect of a project that we can control allows us to add so much more overall value to the project as a whole.”

“Our company is driven by the collaboration of creative people, and we wanted someone with the skills and background needed for our diversity of projects,” adds Northern Lights partner David Gioiella. “We’ve been hearing about Ted for years, and feel he’s a great match. By being selective with our talent and waiting for the right opportunities, we’ve been able to grow Northern Lights successfully into new areas with each department—editing, graphics and visual effects, and audio—integrating with and enhancing the other.”

Gannon comes to Northern Lights from Bionic Media, where he put his mixing and sound design skills to use on promos for Sci Fi, Comedy Central, USA Network, the various Nickelodeon networks (Nick at Nite, Nicktoons, etc.), Food Network and History Channel. He wrote music for Battlestar Galactica promos for Sci Fi, as well as a new miniseries, Tin Man, a re-working of the classic Wizard of Oz story starring Richard Dreyfuss, Zooey Deschanel and Alan Cummings. During this time, Gannon also scored comedy films and independent features.

“Northern Lights is ascendant and going places,” remarks Gannon. “They consistently deliver great work. David and Mark were really interested in my take on music and sound, rather than having a factory approach. I consider mixing, sound design and music as the same art, so we were all on the same page. It’s nice to come in and establish this kind of framework right off the bat.”

The new audio room is equipped with Digidesign Pro Tools, a Digidesign Command|8 control surface and a voice-over booth. Music composition will be done via Apple Logic Pro software.

“One of the great things about Northern Lights is their tight integration with Mr. Wonderful for design and graphics,” concludes Gannon. “I’m really excited to work with them on the graphics, and give input in the early phases of a project. Music and sound are not just an afterthought now. Technologically, my studio is completely integrated with everyone else, but conceptually, we are all involved from the get-go. It’s a refreshing way to approach our work.”
