Paramount Pictures hosted a presentation of PenteoSurround, with a demonstration of numerous stereo hit records and popular soundtracks converted from stereo recordings to full 5.1 surround. John Wheeler, inventor of the process, demonstrated the new 3-D audio process with selections from films such as The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and classic stereo tracks from artists such as Steely Dan. Discussions focused on the crucial need for stereo to 5.1 conversion for film and television, especially from sources that no longer have multichannel audio masters.

“PenteoSurround will make our job so much easier now,” says Paramount’s President of Motion Picture Music, Randy Spendlove. “Not only are we converting classic stereo films [including the studio’s upcoming Footloose re-release], but there is a great need for surround versions of popular songs that are planned for new films we are working on.”

Jason Richmond, Executive Director of Paramount’s Motion Picture Music, adds, “The converted surround audio from Penteo is remarkable—not only is it a rich and accurate experience, but you can actually distinguish the individual voices and instruments, making it much simpler for our mixers to work with legacy tracks and new dialog and effects.”
