Harry Chalmiers, president of McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, Minn., will receive one of the 40 “Minnesotans on the Move” awards from the sponsoring organization, Finance & Commerce, an independent daily newspaper that provides news, analysis and commentary on Minnesota business. The “Minnesotans on the Move” event will be held on April 28, 2010, at 6:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Minneapolis.
Chalmiers has led one of the nation’s leading music colleges through the current recession and established the first Hip-Hop diploma program in the country. Chalmiers is being recognized for his leadership, vision and creativity.
According to a Finance & Commerce report, “The Minnesotans on the Move” award was created last year in conjunction with the newspaper’s 120th anniversary celebration. This year’s honorees were chosen from dozens of outside nominations, as well as suggestions from Finance & Commerce’s editorial staff. In making the nomination for Chalmiers, David O’Fallon, president and CEO of MacPhail Center for Music, noted that “he brings to his role vision, vibrancy and increasing visibility for what is now one of the top three music colleges in the country, offering education in music, music production and technology and music industry studies. A passionate educator, an exemplary administrator—and yes, a fine musician and composer, too—Harry Chalmiers is one of Minnesota’s rising stars and deserving of this recognition.”
