Sennheiser helped a struggling single-parent family to make ends meet by donating a Neumann TLM 49 large diaphragm microphone, which is part of a complete project studio package designed and installed by Dale Pro Audio of New York City. The studio is part of a brand-new house that was built and unveiled for a family on ABC’s ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ on Sunday, November 11.

Billy Joe Marrero, the eldest of five children, is an aspiring DJ, musician and songwriter who has dreamed of being able to help his ailing father achieve financial stability through his creative efforts.

“We were looking for a reasonably priced, good looking, great sounding mic that would really make this kid happy,” says David Roman, technical support applications engineer at Dale Pro Audio. “From what we had heard, he was into hip hop, so assuming he would be doing electronic beats or sampling, we figured there was going to be a lot of emphasis on the vocals, so we had to give him a decent vocal chain, and the Neumann TLM 49 is a reasonably priced, but high-quality microphone.”

Explaining the choice of microphone, Roman says, “Number one, it’s a Neumann. Everyone in the business knows what that name means in microphones.” The TLM 49 is a relatively new addition to the Neumann product line, he notes. “Not too many people have checked it out yet, because it’s fairly new, but it’s a great sounding mic. Also, it looks impressive, and we were trying to get this guy something that would also look cool.”

Roman, Kevin Huppert, and James Bentley were the principal designers and installers of the studio. Dale Pro Audio owners Valerie and Michael Lager, general manager Tim Finnegan and other staff members, as well as numerous other audio equipment manufacturers, also contributed to the project, which involved the Extreme Makeover team constructing a house from the ground up in just seven days.
