Nine leading companies announced that they will begin disclosing the specifications for the Blu-Ray Disc, a next-generation, large-capacity, optical-disc, video-recording format, on June 14, 2002.

The disc enables the recording, rewriting and playback of up to 27 GB of data on a single-sided, single-layer, 12cm CD/DVD-sized disc using a 405nm blue-violet laser. The disc can also record over two hours of digital high-definition video and more than 13 hours of standard TV broadcasting.

The companies involved are: Hitachi, LG Electronics, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Pioneer, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sharp Corporation, Sony Corporation and Thomson Multimedia.

As reported in May, Blu-Ray Disc’s main specifications include: 23.3/25/27GB recording capacity, 36Mbps high-speed data-transfer rate, phase-change recording format, MPEG-2 video-recording format, and AC3 and MPEG-1, Layer 2 audio-recording format.
