For the past 10 years, freelance recording engineer Eric Rudd hasbeen involved with a side project that has allowed him to escape thestudio and visit such exotic locales as Africa, Cyprus, Trinidad,Puerto Rico, Panama and Hawaii. Last year, Rudd, a music coordinatorfor three of the Miss Universe Organization's annual pageant telecasts,as well as a recording engineer, added Metric Halo Mobile I/O, adigital recording, editing and mixing solution, to his rig, whichallows him to transition between music recording and broadcast.

"The Mobile I/O allows me to operate in a wide variety of situationsthat I wouldn't be able to otherwise," said Rudd, who has also acted asmusic coordinator for The 2000 Alma Awards and theNickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards. "It is such a useful tool forportable recording, editing and mixing."

Explaining his broadcast rig, Rudd said, "I use my TiBook, theMobile I/O and Ableton's Live to do the playback for the telecast. Theshows are 'live' so the music cannot be posted. I assign music cues tobuttons on my keyboard and off we go. Because of the amount of music, music sources and crossfades in the show, I was originally running twodigicarts and two [360 Systems] Instant Replays on the show, along withDAT and CD. With the Mobile I/O, I can now easily have four stereomusic sources from within my laptop and switch to a fully portablestudio for other recording situations when needed."

For example, offered Rudd, "When the talent on the show discoversthat their song is the wrong length or the last-minute edit they didbefore arriving on location is wrong, I can fire up Nuendo and theMobile I/O and do onsite editing. Due to some of the locations fromwhich we do the Universe show, it can be difficult to get new versionssent overseas in a time-efficient manner. The Mobile I/O allows me toset up a very portable DAW in strange places, sometimes even in myhotel room.

"I generally track to RADAR 24 and then FTP the files into mycomputer. I then use the Mobile I/O for my D-to-A when I'm doing myediting and mixing with Nuendo. I also have brought my TiBook andMobile I/O to an artist's house to do vocals in their living room."

Rudd has most recently worked with Peabo Bryson, Oleta Adams,Wynonna Judd, Rita Coolidge and Shane Minor. In 2000, he recorded andmixed music for the CBS Charles Schulz Tribute Special withFaith Hill. Rudd's other projects include mixing Chet Atkins' albumAlmost Alone (including "Jam Man" winner of the 1997 GrammyAward for Country Instrumental Solo). He most recently recorded theNashville Symphony for a national corporate client.
