Golfers at this year’s CVS Charity Classic, a two-daytournament that draws the likes of PGA members, were treated to apost-tourney concert by Huey Lewis & The News, who used an EAWKF760 line array system with EAW KF730 small line array modules.
PGA tour members Brad Faxon and Billy Andrade hosted the CVS CharityClassic’s annual Dinner Gala. This fundraising dinner featured a silentand live auction, and was held at the Rhode Island Convention Center inProvidence, R.I. AVS of Rhode Island was the in-house A/V provider forthe convention center. For the third year in a row, AVS was brought inby Frank Miranda of A Better Resolution, the producer for the event, tohelp stage the dinner.
“Historically, the dinner was usually in the ballroom, about 20,000square feet,” said Chris Gasbarro of massAV. “To accommodate thegrowing size and logistics of the silent auction area, the event wasmoved to two-thirds of the exhibition hall this year.”
The team at massAV was no stranger to this hall: The hall was usedfor the initial beta testing during the development of the EAW KF760line array system in the winter of 2001.
The exhibit hall features a polished cement floor and an open steelceiling. An air wall was used to cordon off approximately 60,000 squarefeet for a 240×240 room. This blend of open space with a highlyreflective floor surface made for a challenging acoustical environment.The open steel ceiling also presented the crew with another problem: somany boxes, so few rigging points. To overcome these issues, AVSdeployed the first ever combination of the EAW KF760 line array systemwith EAW’s new KF730 small line array module (SLAM) loudspeakers.
“For a small box, the KF730 has a good throw distance [coveringabout 130 feet for the show], even coverage and lines up well with theKF760s,” said Jason Geshelin of massAV. “And with limited riggingcapabilities, the pre-rigged assembly was able to fly off of onepoint.”
The main system comprised 12 KF760 long-throw modules, four KF761near-field modules, 12 KF730 small line array modules for side coverageof the stage and four KF650 loudspeakers for frontfill; 12 SB1000sprovided low-end coverage. The KF760 system was powered by 12 Crest9001s and eight Crest 8002s. Two Lab Gruppen fP6400 amps powered theKF730s. A QSC PL 6.0, PL 236 and PL 218 powered the KF650’s low, mid-and high sections, respectively. Processing for the system consisted ofa dbx DriveRack 480R, two dbx DriveRack 480s, three dbx DriveRack 482sand an EAW MX8750 processor.
Huey Lewis and The News carried their own monitor rig and FOHconsole and electrics. Jim Moran, FOH engineer for Huey Lewis, mixedthe show on a Gamble EX56 console. Jason Geshelin and Howard Rose ofmassAV served as system engineers for the event.
