International recording legend Julio Iglesias will be honored as the2001 Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Person of the Year.The honor recognizes Iglesias' professional and philanthropicaccomplishments. A portion of the proceeds from the LARAS Person of theYear tribute dinner will benefit the Latin Academy's outreach andeducation programs.
"Julio Iglesias is the pre-eminent ambassador for Latin music andculture throughout the world," said Michael Greene, president/CEO ofthe Recording Academy and Latin Recording Academy. "It is so very rarethat a man of such talent, passion and commitment to his fans andculture comes along, and it is the Latin Academy's great pleasure tohonor this international treasure."
Iglesias will receive the honor at a star-studded tribute dinner andconcert on September 11, 2001, in Miami. The Latin Academy Person ofthe Year tribute dinner is one of the most prestigious events of LatinGrammy Week and will precede the Second Annual Latin Grammy Awards,which will be held at AmericanAirlines Arena on September 12. The LatinGrammys will air on the CBS Television Network and on radio via theHispanic Broadcasting Corporation worldwide.
Since signing his first recording contract in 1968, Iglesias hastoured the globe tirelessly, visiting cities in Europe, North and LatinAmericas, Asia, Africa, Australia and the Middle East. Today, Iglesiashas over 2,500 Platinum and Gold records internationally, and his mostrecent release, Noche De Cuatro Lunas, has already achievedmulti-Platinum success.
Iglesias is the second Latin Recording Academy Person of the Yearhonoree, following the celebration of Emilio Estefan's achievements inconjunction with the first Latin Grammy Awards in 2001.
