L-Acoustics U.S. has made its Array 2004 available to all of itsV-DOSC network partners, independent rep firms, dV-DOSC providers andcertified V-DOSC engineers. This software is available for freedownload by clicking on the V-DOSC NTW Page link at www.l-acoustics.com and entering a confidentialpassword provided by the company.

Array 2004 is a convenient, easy-to-use Excel spreadsheet tooldesigned to predict the horizontal and vertical coverage of V-DOSC ordV-DOSC line source arrays. By defining the audience geometry (sectionand plan views), desired number of elements, interelement angles andarray trim height, installation parameters, horizontal and verticalcoverage, SPL (A-weighted and unweighted), stability of the verticaldirectivity and mechanical data (array weight, load distribution, center of gravity) can all be determined.

The first four worksheets (V-ARRAY1, V-ARRAY2, dV-ARRAY1, dV-ARRAY2)represent vertical cut views (section elevations) of the audience inthe XZ plane and show the intersection of the vertical aiming directionof each loudspeaker element with the audience (impact zones). The siteangle for each element is calculated according to the user-inputangles, and the impact zones indicate where an individual cabinet'scoverage hits the audience area. The resulting cut view shows a pseudo3-D projection of the coverage of the system onto a section view of theaudience. Typically, cut view 1 is used for the main (0 degree) axis ofthe system, while cut view 2 is used for the offstage axis (45 or 60degrees for V-DOSC or dV-DOSC, respectively) to determine offstage fillrequirements.

The optimization procedure involves varying the array trim heightand inter-element angles to obtain constant spacing of element impactzones over the main and offstage cut views, while verifying thatsufficient coverage is obtained offstage. The goal is to have equalspacing of element impact zones to satisfy WST Criterion #4.Essentially, cut view sheets are used to shape the vertical coverage ofV-DOSC or dV-DOSC arrays to match the audience area and to determineall installation parameters (inter-element angles, trim heights,top/bottom site angles).

The H-ISOCONTOUR sheet displays the horizontal iso contour(continuous A-weighted SPL mapping) of all defined V-DOSC and/ordV-DOSC arrays projected onto a plan view of the audience area in theXY plane. The horizontal iso contour of the system's coverage is usedto determine the extent of stereo imaging and check array placement andaiming, as well as to determine whether offstage fill, front-fill orcenter cluster-fill systems are required. Two audience areas can bedefined and the coverage of up to four arrays displayed (2x V-DOSC, 2xdV-DOSC).
