Since its recent introduction, Meyer Sound’s MILO has been used on numerous tours and installs, including the Monterey Jazz Festival, national conventions, additions to Wichie Sound’s (Ponce, Puerto Rico) inventory and much more.
McCune Audio/Video/Lighting employed 12 MILO high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers in the prestigious 46th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival’s (Monterey, Calif.) largest venue: the Arena/Jimmy Lyons Stage. The weekend-long concert series boasted more than 500 artists on five stages, ranging from the delicate solo guitar of Ralph Towner to a plethora of big bands, from high school to professional level. The audience listened to every one of these acts through Meyer Sound loudspeakers provided by San Francisco’s McCune Audio/Video/Lighting. Sound supervisor Mike Neal has worked the festival for McCune since 1970.
McCune engineer Hal Soogian, who has mixed sound for the Arena Stage for the past 20 years, was eager to bring the MILO cabinets in this year. Coverage was achieved by supplying each side of the stage with an array of six MILO high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers, two M3D-Sub directional subwoofers and an MSL-4 horn-loaded long-throw loudspeaker for sidefill coverage of the nearest section of bleacher seats.
“Purists might wonder why we used a long-throw MSL-4 for side fill,” Neal said. “The answer is the tight pattern control of the MSL-4. With a lot of brick and concrete in these areas, the MSL-4s are just the ticket.”
Four UPM-1P ultracompact wide-coverage loudspeakers were mounted on the front face of the stage just below the lip to provide frontfill (foam padding was placed around the UPM-1Ps to prevent inadvertent injury to audience members) and two more MSL-4s were used for stage monitoring for some acts. The FOH system was equalized with an LD-3 compensating line driver to aid in handling both the low-mid frequency buildup endemic to line arrays and the changeable weather common to coastal areas such as Monterey.
The other outdoor venue was the Garden Stage, a small, sylvan glade surrounded by an ivy-covered fence, with a capacity of 1,800. The Garden was easily covered by three MSL-4s and a 650-P high-power subwoofer on each side, plus two UPM-1Ps for frontfill. The largest of the three indoor venues was Dizzy’s Den, the size of a small warehouse and with a peaked roof. The Den was the site for a number of big bands, particularly from high schools and colleges, requiring more punch than the Garden. Five M2D compact curvilinear array loudspeakers and a 650-P subwoofer per side gave ample coverage and power for all that brass.
Bartha Visuals (Columbus, Ohio) put 32 MILO loudspeakers to immediate use for the national convention of the Future Farmers of America. The rest of the rig comprises Meyer Sound MSL-4, CQ-1, CQ-2, M3D-Sub, DS-4P, UPA-1P and UPM-1P loudspeakers.
Wichie Sound (Ponce, Puerto Rico) has added MILO high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers to its existing inventory of Meyer Sound products. The 16 MILO cabinets are Wichie’s first purchase from Meyer Sound’s M series of products. The new MILO system joins Wichie’s Meyer Sound loudspeakers, including MSL-6, MSL-4, MTS-4A, DS-2P, 650-P, UPA-2P, UMP-1P, UM-1P and USW-1P.
Show Systems (Orlando, Fla.) has added a 24-box MILO high-power curvilinear array loudspeaker system and are featuring it on the home page of their Website at www.showsystem.com. An entire page of the site has been dedicated to MILO.
Scottish rockers Travis’ UK and European tours are being handled by London’s Capital Sound Hire Ltd. and a complement of Meyer Sound loudspeakers. On the four UK shows, Capital will use 20 MILO high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers, six M3D-Sub directional subwoofers and four UPA-1P compact wide-coverage loudspeakers. Travis’ 16-plus-city European tour will take them to venues as large as the 14,000-seat Spektrum in Oslo. According to Capital Project Manager Paul Timmins, for the larger halls on the continent, Capital will employ side hangs of six additional MILO cabinets each.
