Otari showed the ZA9DA-S IEEE-1394 (FireWire) and ZA-9CF-S MADIoptional interface modules for its FS-96 96 kHz Digital Format andSample Rate Converter.

The IEEE-1394 I/O module is a new option that allows users to sendand receive multichannel digital audio signals over an IEEE-1394 S400network at up to 400 Mbps/second. The module supports Yamaha’smLAN protocol for the transmission of audio data and control signalsover a FireWire connection.

The Otari ND-20 audio network distribution system, YamahaPM1D/DM-2000, or any other available IEEE-1394 mLAN product can easilybe connected to the IEEE-1394 audio network for digital signaltransmission and routing. Installation of the option board in the FS-96permits audio data conversion between IEEE-1394 and all common dataformats (including AES/EBU, TDIF, SDIF2 and ADAT) supported by theFS-96.

Synchronization between IEEE-1394 and other formats can beaccomplished in a variety of ways: synchronizing to the clockassociated with the incoming digital signal; using the FS-96’sinternal crystal clock; synchronizing to Word Clock input received atthe BNC connector; or using the SYT clock generated from SYT packets onthe IEEE-1394 bus.

The MADI module allows the FS-96 to handle MADI serial digital audiosignals according to the AES10 standard. With the card installed, theFS-96 can convert MADI format signals at sample rates up to 96 kHz toany of the other formats supported by the unit. All common MADI formatsare supported, allowing for conversion to and from both 96kHz andlegacy frame patterns to AES dual-speed and dual-wire.

The option modules, like the FS-96, can handle up to 24 channels of96kHz digital audio signals. In the case of MADI, the 24 input andoutput channels can be selected from the up to 56 channels that may bepresent on the interface, with signal routing within the selectedchannels for maximum flexibility. All 56 MADI channels can be fullyutilized by cascading three FS-96 units.

Configuration options for both cards are displayed on theFS-96’s LCD screen for front -panel access, and setup parametersare performed within the FS-96 menu system.
