The first Pro Tools Conference will be co-located at the Avid World Conference, scheduled for December 9-12, 2001, at the New Yorker Hotel. The four-day event will feature a complete Pro Tools track, focusing on such topics as Pro Tools technical troubleshooting and setup for music and post surround, scoring and composing for film and TV using Pro Tools and Soft SampleCell II, and mixing in surround sound formats.

The conference, which also includes a two-day expo, will include four parallel tracks of 70-plus educational classes, keynote speeches and networking events. A few of the Pro Tools-focused keynote presenters include: Larry Blake, a sound editor who has worked on Traffic, Erin Brokovich and The Limey, and is also Mix‘s film sound editor; Jan Folkson, a MIDI programmer/Pro Tools engineer who has worked with Elton John, Steely Dan, Tony Bennett, Vanessa Williams and Bon Jovi; Phil Benson, a sound editor at Skywalker Sound and an Academy Award nominee (Best Sound Editing) for such films as Forrest Gump, Contact and Space Cowboys; and Eugene Gearty, a sound editor who has worked on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Fargo.

“It’s become exceedingly difficult to assemble a large cross-section of Pro Tools end-users, and also give them access to leading industry professionals as well as the people who design and develop the system,” said Rick Friedman, president and co-founder of Mindshare Ventures, a co-organizer of the event. “That’s why an event like this conference is so rare and so unique. Pro Tools has become the ‘must-use’ digital editing system for the film, TV, music and post-production industries. Still, no matter how familiar users are with Pro Tools, there’s always something new to be learned. That’s what this conference is all about — giving editors a chance to hear and learn what other editors are doing.”
