Robert Scovill Shares Tips With Audio Pros

Robert Scovill, front-of-house engineer for Tom Petty and TheHeartbreakers, Prince, Def Leppard, Rush and Matchbox 20, recentlyoffered a select group of audio pros from around the world an insidelook at how he works. Under the banner of audioseminars.com,Scovill’s offering, “The Complete Front-of-HouseEngineer” chose the Conservatory of Recording Arts’(Gilbert, Ariz.) new 6,000-square-foot live sound classroom to host theevent; Scovill helped design this room.

“We think it’s a golden opportunity for us to be doing this at theConservatory,” said Scovill. “The live sound lab at CRAS isconsiderable, a little over 150,000 cubic feet and that allows us toshowcase a sound reinforcement seminar curriculum and the gear in acompletely professional setting.”

Featured P.A. gear for the event was supplied in part by ProMixElectrotec and included a VDOSC line array P.A. with ARCs andL-Acoustic subs, TD-1s, Runts and BDEAP subs from Sound Physics Labs.Other gear from Electrotec included a Paragon Production II console,API 2500 compressor, Klark Teknik Helix Equalization, Lake TechnologiesContour, XTA system crossovers and delays, Distressor compressors, UREI1176 compressors, TC M3000 and M4000, and Yamaha SPX 990s. Eldon’s BoyProductions provided 64 I/Os of Pro Tools, 64 I/Os of Tascam DA-88 andRamlatch snakes and splitters.

The three-day hands-on seminar covered SIA Smaart operation, FFTanalysis and RTA and system tuning, outboard gear usage such ascompression, limiting, time-based processing, and MIDI and consolerouting concepts.

Local band Nobility Obliged was brought in for an extendedsoundcheck and then was mixed the following day. Conservatoryadministrator Kirt Hamm said, “This kind of event lets us offer ourstudents a pros’ eye view of the industry. Robert’sexperience in the industry is unparalleled, which is why we had himdesign our live sound curriculum.”
