The new Spatial One Near-Field Control Room Monitor from Stephen Klein is a QB3-aligned, rear-vented enclosure. A 2-inch vent flared on both ends ensures that maximum bass performance is achieved without adding wind coloration under heavy loads.

“The tight alignment means the bass is ‘fast.'” Klein said. “Normal vented enclosures have a fourth-order alignment. A sealed enclosure has a second-order alignment, but typically insufficient bass extension. A passive radiator monitor has a sixth-order alignment. The higher the alignment order, the longer the latency: the time it takes for the bass to respond. While an active/passive radiator design can always delay the pass band-the frequency range above the woofer so that the bottom end catches up with it-they can never fix that sixth-order transient.”

Bass can be further extended using the Stomper Subwoofer. “With a 10-inch carbon-fiber-reinforced driver and near a 2-inch travel,” Klein continued, “Stomper delivers a maximum of 115 dB at 1 meter.” The QB3’s subwoofer is direct-radiating and isobarically stable. For active powering, Spatial One features a five-way terminal binding post with clearly marked polarity on solid brass fittings and a heavy gauge wire capacity. The passive input terminal can be removed and replaced with an active input, allowing the HF tweeter and LF driver to connect directly to system amplifiers. An embedded carrying handle with mounting points enable flying off any suitable trusses, or on stands to suit the studio layout.

Specifications include: sensitivity pf 88 dB @ 1W/1 meter; frequency response at 3 dB is 59-38k Hz; frequency response at 10 dB is 50-40 k Hz; and the tweeter is a 1-inch treated lightweight fabric cone, while the woofer is a 6.5-inch polypropylene-rubber surround. Dimensions are 16x12x7.5 inches and weights 27 pounds.

Recommended pro-user price is a $1,099/pair. For more, visit www.soundcontrolroom.com.
