Tascam Announces 2488 24-Track, GigaStudio 3.0 Update

Tascam recently announced the 2488, a 24-track recording workstationthat sells for less than $1,500. The 2488 records 24 tracks of audio at24-bit resolution, with 250 virtual tracks and editing and loopingfunctions. Its 36 mixer inputs mix 24 playback tracks, eight analoginputs, a 64-voice MIDI tone generator and stereo effectsprocessor.

Three-band EQ is provided for all 24 channels, plus the eight inputsand tone generator channel. Three aux sends—one for each mixerchannel except for the effects return—send to a loop effect witheffects like reverb and delay or external devices. Up to eight dynamicsprocessors can be utilized while recording or mixing, and an additionalstereo compressor is dedicated to the stereo output. The 2488 can alsomaster and burn a CD using a built-in CD-RW drive, or transfer tracksto a computer using a high-speed USB 2.0 connection.

Tascam’s 2488 was developed using Analog Devices’ SHARCADSP-21161N processor, which adds powerful multi-effects, dynamicsprocessing and stereo compression to the Portastudio’s robustfunctionality.

Tascam also announced three new versions of GigaStudio 3.0:Orchestra, Ensemble and Solo. The new versions offer up to unlimitedpolyphony, 96kHz/24-bit sample support, ReWire support, VST FX andGigaPiano 2, and real-time convolution.
