Yamaha Intros New Digital Mixing Studio

Yamaha’s 01X mLAN Digital Mixing Studio functions as a stand-alone, total recall digital mixer for recording or live performance.

Yamaha’s 01X mLAN Digital Mixing Studio functions as astand-alone, total recall digital mixer for recording or liveperformance.

This single, self-contained unit works as a 28-channel digitalmixer; an intuitive user interface with transport controls, eight knobsand motorized faders; DAW remote control with motorized faders;24-bit/96kHz multichannel mLAN I/O; powerful DSP processing;low-latency Mac and Windows drivers; and a comprehensive softwaresupport package.

“Up until now, you had to literally piece together a computer musicstudio with separate products from different manufacturers, which oftentranslated into compatibility and support issues,” said MichaelMartin, marketing manager of Digital Musical Instruments. “Withthe Yamaha 01X, everything is available in one convenient, affordablepackage with a level of power, integration and flexibility never beforeoffered. The 01X bridges the gap between computer-based systems and thehands-on realm of hardware mixers and controllers.”

The 01X uses the same 96kHz DSP technology found in Yamaha’sDM2000, DM1000, 02R96 and 01V96 digital mixers. Signal quality ismaintained with high-quality mic preamps and +48V phantom power onbalanced XLR, TRS and line input connectors. Full dynamics processing, including compressors, gates, limiters and 4-band parametric EQ onevery one of the 28 digital mixing channels, plus two 32-bit effectsprocessors means that the 01X puts no strain on the host computer formixing or audio processing. Fully motorized faders ensure that mixescan be recalled and accurately tracked at the touch of a button.

The 01X is the first product to feature Yamaha’snext-generation mLAN networking technology. Conforming to IEEE 1394FireWire, mLAN provides high-speed audio and MIDI networking betweenaudio, video, synthesizers and computer equipment via a single“plug and play” line, eliminating the multitude of wiresthat discrete connections require. Optional channel expansion unitsallow up to 63 mLAN-compatible devices from Yamaha and other alliancecompanies to be linked together. Up to 16 additional analog inputs canbe added via mLAN with the 01X internal digital processors and mixingchannels handling the routing/effects/EQ and dynamics.

Track arming, transport control, plug-in editing, mixing and windowselection may be controlled directly from the worksurface. The 01X alsoprovides full support for recording and sequencer softwareproducts—including Cubase SX, Nuendo, Sonar, Logic and DigitalPerformer—and will also control a wide range of parameters inmany popular software synthesizers. The 01X also functions as amultiport MIDI interface, offering hundreds of channels, and enablingexisting MIDI devices to be easily connected directly to the unit.

Full MIDI capability, plus low-latency 24-bit/96kHz audio driversupport for Windows XP and Macintosh (OS 9/OS X) platforms willseamlessly integrate the 01X into any existing productionenvironment.

The bundled software suite includes: Studio Manager, providingvisual reference and control for every parameter directly from acomputer screen; three VST plug-ins for enhanced vocal processing, pitch correction and mastering; and a VST-compatible 01X channelmodule, which mirrors all DSP hardware functions and enables parametersfrom Studio Manager to be copied directly into the VST-hostingapplication.
