Editors Tour With Sennheiser

The Editors are currently on the road throughout Europe, which started with a run of three sold-out shows at London’s Brixton Academy and an appearance at the Isle of Wight Festival. Supporting the band is a slew of Sennheiser gear, including an e 840 wired vocal mic for frontman Tom Smith.

Front-of-house engineer Nick Ingram says, “The dynamics from the cardioid e 840 are tremendous. We tried several mics before discovering the e 840, which enables us to control sibilance without compromising on presence. It doesn’t overload the front end on you, and the result is a full-bodied, rich-sounding mic, which is ideal for Tom’s vocals.”

Ingram, who’s first major touring job has been with The Editors, but has also worked with Dogs Die in Hot Cars and Jim Moray, is enthusiastic with the sounds that he’s been getting from Evolution mics on the drums. “I use e 904s on toms because they just have a bigger body to them,” Ingram says. “With less EQ, you can make them sound a lot better than any other mics I’ve tried.

“Completing the backline setup, I like to run an e 609 on Chris Urbanowicz’s guitar and e 906s for Tom Smith’s guitar and bass guitar distortion. I look for a lot of midrange in my guitars, and the e 906, with its three adjustable sound characteristics, is really punchy-sounding while retaining warmth.”

The band’s wireless personal monitors are Sennheiser EW 300 IEM-G2 systems. According to Ingram, “These are undeniably the industry standard. The audio quality is superb and doesn’t suffer from the high-end sizzle that some rival systems do. The scanning function is a real bonus, cutting down on setup time each day. And the overall sound quality and small pack size has been a real hit with the band, which is the most important factor at the end of the day.”

After the American leg of their tour, the Editors move on to Japan before their final date in Turkey on September 3.
