If you’re in pro audio, you dig music. And if you dig music, there’s a good chance you like record stores, even if you haven’t visited one in a while. And if you like record stores, you’re gonna love Record Store Day.
Every year, independent record stores around the U.S. celebrate Record Store Day, an event devoted to getting music lovers back into local record shops, helping remind them how cool it is to browse the bins and discover something they never knew they needed to hear. It used to be that every day was record store day, but in these download-oriented times, occasionally folks need a refresher course on the cool musical community that’s right down the block—and in danger of disappearing.
The big excitement about RSD, however, is that labels unleash a barrage of ultra limited-edition releases (usually on cool vinyl, no less), serving up instant rarities from legends like The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen, to current acts like Amberlin and Matt & Kim, to longtime fervid record store supporters like R.E.M. (Peter Buck and Michael Stipe first met in a record store after all).
Record Store Day 2011 will be held on April 16, and while you can try to pre-order the limited edition releases from your local emporium, get ready to do some driving around; because of scarce supplies, retailers don’t know which orders will be filled—or how many copies they’ll get of a release—until they open the boxes that morning.

F-cked Up – Town Comp – While recording their new album, the rock opera David Comes To Life, F-cked Up discovered they had 15 extra tracks once the album and associated singles were complete. They decided to repurpose the extra songs as a fictitious compilation album from a British town circa 1978-83, in the tradition of local punk, post-punk, and DIY comps of the era. The town is the one in which the opera is set. All tracks unreleased, and will not be on the new FU album (out May 24). Limited to 800 copies.

Gordon, Mike – Moss Remixes – Mike Gordon, bassists and founding member of the seminal rock band Phish, released is latest solo album, Moss, on Rounder Records in October of 2010. For Record Store Day, Mike wanted to give fans a sneak peak into the making of that album. The idea was not to remix the songs, but instead, to work with the moments that had lead to the germination of the songs that ended up on the album. The two tracks include bits of original demos, bass and drum jams, and added textures. Created exclusively for Record Store Day.
