Dave Rat’s Epic Google Glass Coachella Run

The annual Coachella festival takes months to put together, but even the pros who make it happen can underestimate the sheer size of it. Case in point: this cool video by Dave Rat of Rat Sound. Wearing Google Glass—the controversial head-worn computer/camera device—Rat announces he’s going to run to all six Coachella stages that his company handles audio for in just 10 minutes, and takes off at a sprint. Needless to say, the video is twice as long.

Wearing Google Glass—the controversial head-worn computer/camera device—Rat announces he’s going to run to all six Coachella stages that his company handles audio for in just 10 minutes, and takes off at a sprint. Needless to say, the video is twice as long.

Held annually on the Empire Polo Club grounds in Indio, CA, Coachella is one of the strongest brands in the festival business today, and Rat Sound has tackled many of the event’s sound requirements for years. 2014 was no different, as Rat’s POV video shows; at each stop, he points out a variety of L-Acoustics and occasional RCF boxes, dissects the delay hangs, glances at the FOH consoles, and speeds off to the next stop. Eventually the whirlwind tour ends beneath the pounding main stage at the amp racks—next to which someone lies, blissfully asleep amidst the ruckus.

Aside from eyeballing the gear onsite and the novelty of seeing Google Glass video—which makes everyone appear to walk like ducks—Rat’s epic run is also a primer on speeding past security guards (politeness counts) and how to weave expertly through giant crowds—an intuitive life-skill at which Rat is clearly a seasoned pro.
