Review Previews: First Impressions with ADAM and Sennheiser

In my job as Reviews Editor, I listen to a lot of different studio monitoring systems in my workspace. When this ADAM AX Series three-way system arrived for review, I was reminded of how lovely, detailed and expressive I’ve always found ribbon tweeters to be in studio monitors. Meanwhile, having previously reviewed the excellent MK 4—a Sennheiser cardioid LDC made at the company’s HQ in Germany for $299 street—I jumped at the opportunity to try its multipattern sibling, the MK 8, also made in Germany.

ADAM Professional Audio AX Series A7X/Sub 10 Three-Way Monitoring System

In my job as Reviews Editor, I listen to a lot of different studio monitoring systems in my workspace. When this ADAM AX Series three-way system arrived for review, I was reminded of how lovely, detailed and expressive I’ve always found ribbon tweeters to be in studio monitors. Just days with them as my main monitors and I’m once again hearing little details, like evaporating reverb tails, and overall mixes with the familiar open, unrestricted sound that I believe its proprietary X-ART folded tweeters provide. Stay tuned to my column in next month’s PSN as we delve deeper in reviewing this impressive monitoring solution for small- to mid-sized audio production spaces.

Sennheiser MK 8 Multipattern Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone

Having previously reviewed the excellent MK 4—a Sennheiser cardioid LDC made at the company’s HQ in Germany for $299 street—I jumped at the opportunity to try its multipattern sibling, the MK 8, also made in Germany. Boasting 5 polar patterns, 3 roll-off filters and a 3 position pad switch, I can already tell it’s going to be a super useful workhorse for many potential users and applications. Like the MK 4, the MK 8 isn’t a budget mic, but it’s a bargain.
