Inside the Audio of Creed and Fruitvale Station

One of the surprise hits of 2015 was Creed, the spinoff of the Rocky film series, which raked in praise from critics, more than $125 million at the box office, and a best-supporting actor Oscar nomination for Sylvester Stallone. The success was deserved as the film adroitly introduced a new generation to the saga of fighter/everyman Rocky Balboa, while shifting focus to Adonis Creed, son of Rocky’s former opponent-turned-trainer Apollo. Overseeing the new spin on a familiar story was director Ryan Coogler, then just off a win at the Sundance Film Festival with his indie breakout, Fruitvale Station. Key to both of Coogler’s films was his strong understanding of how to use audio and music to underscore and enhance the narrative. In the wake of Creed’s success, Coogler recently spoke about how he uses sound and music in his films at a masterclass—and the disccusion is now available for free online as part of the Dolby Institute/Soundworks Collection podcast.
