Audio Network’s Sheppard at SXSW

Film and theater composer Philip Sheppard will perform an interactive set during an Audio Network-sponsored event at South By Southwest in Austin, TX this month.

New York, NY (March 4, 2014)—Film and theater composer Philip Sheppard will perform an interactive set during an Audio Network-sponsored event at South By Southwest in Austin, TX this month.

Sheppard, a prolific film and theatre composer, cellist, pioneer of the electric cello and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London, will show the audience how he builds a track before performing it live at the Audio Network-sponsored event, The Austin Jump-Off, on March 12. The event is a collaboration with Black Magnetic Records (owned by music supervisor PJ Bloom), The Cellar Music, an independent publishing and marketing company, and CandyShop Management, an independent artist management firm.

“I am going to be using an 18th century English cello and 21st century guitar technology to build an improvised symphony on stage,” explained Sheppard. “My set will range from 15th century dance music, through Appalachian songs to hardcore experimental music. Using horsehair, gut strings and harmonics alone, I will attempt to prove that the oldest technology is sometimes the best…whether impersonating Jimi Hendrix’s guitar tone or building an orchestral piece from scratch. I’ll also incorporate sounds I’ve devised for songs I’ve worked on with artists as diverse as David Bowie, Jeff Buckley and Pretty Lights.”

Sheppard, whose repertoire includes work with rock artists, feature films and stage works, has recorded three orchestral albums for Audio Network at Abbey Road Studios. He produced the handover sequence in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and re-scored and recorded all 205 of the world’s National Anthems (with the London Philharmonic Orchestra) for the London 2012 Olympics.

The Austin Jump-Off takes place at Maggie Mae’s (323 Eth Street, Austin) from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
