d&b Brings It for Barrowland Ballroom

FE Live Audio fields a new d&b audiotechnik PA at the venerable venue in Glasgow, Scotland.

Glasgow, Scotland (December 18, 2017)—Open for more than 80 years, Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom has always been a key stop for acts on their way up, having hosted the likes of David Bowie, U2, The Smiths, Simple Minds and many more (seemingly every 1980s UK live B-side was recorded there). Recently, Glasgow sound hire company, FE Live Audio, has been using a d&b audiotechnik V-Series rig for the Ballroom.

As a prime example, FE Live handled audio production for a run of multiple, sold out homecoming shows in the ballroom by homegrown acts like Twin Atlantic, Frightened Rabbit, The Fratellis, and Fatherson.

ArrayProcessing allowed the FE team to constantly optimize the V-Series system throughout the shows to suit the changing humidity and temperature of the room using the ArrayCalc simulation tool and R1 Remote control software.

“It’s a very cold venue during sound check,” said FE’s managing director, Ryan Mcilravey, “and can go from [57° F]…then jump as high as [77° F] for a headline band, especially one that draws an active crowd like Twin Atlantic.”

Another factor at the ballroom is that the trim height is relatively low for a venue of its size. Mcilravey observed, “I was skeptical about using a flown system at first, but with V-Series, we can adjust the frame angle in very small increments so it’s as close to the roof as we can get it while still fitting in a full eight box array.” He also noted, “The sixteen V-SUBs and four J-INFRAs in use here have a cardioid dispersion pattern, so there’s no old school omnidirectional subs being used; this helps keep noise complaints from the nearby residential areas a very rare occurrence.”
