New York, NY (December 13, 2012)—Last night’s 12-12-12 Concert for Sandy Relief, held inside New York City’s Madison Square Garden, was broadcast to a potential audience of 2 billion people worldwide. For the thousands packed inside the venerable venue, however, the show was heard thanks to the audio work of Red Hook, NY-based Firehouse Productions.
That the massive charity concert happened at all was impressive; less than two months ago, Superstorm Sandy ravaged the East Coast, slamming New York, New Jersey and Connecticut with some of the most destructive weather the region has experienced in decades.
Helping to raise funds to get the affected back on their feet were some of the biggest names in music, as Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Billy Joel, Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Roger Waters, The Who, Bon Jovi, Chris Martin (Coldplay), Eric Clapton and former members of Nirvana took to the stage Wednesday night.
Outside the venue, Music Mix Mobile (Haworth, NJ) had its east coast M3 truck on-hand to mix the broadcast, while inside the Garden, Firehouse fielded JBL VTX line arrays with Crown I-Tech HD amplification.
Most of the major national sound companies had clients at the 12-12-12 concert though, including Solotech (Springsteen); Clair (Joel, McCartney, Bon Jovi, Stones, Waters, Who, Keys); Eighth Day Sound (West, Martin) (Coldplay); Delicate Productions (Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters/Nirvana); and Rat Sound (Vedder).
Musical highpoints of the evening included a number of surprise collaborations, from Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi belting “Born To Run” to Chris Martin and Michael Stipe of REM running through “Losing My Religion.”
McCartney’s set took the cake, however, as he was joined by the remaining members of Nirvana—performing together for the first time since Kurt Cobain’s death—to debut a new co-written song, “Cut Me Some Slack.” Reminiscent of both The Guess Who’s “American Woman” and McCartney’s own “Helter Skelter” (ironically, performed only moments earlier), the track will appear in Nirvana/Foo Fighters member Dave Grohl’s upcoming studio documentary, Sound City, and on its soundtrack, Sound City – Real to Reel.
