Los Angeles CA (October 31, 2017)—Halsey has been making the rounds for the last month on her Hopeless Fountain Kingdom Tour with audio provided by Eighth Day Sound. One of the show’s key moments finds the singer and her dancers taking over a B-stage for two songs, and while that’s not unusual, the stage itself is. Filled with 20 gallons of water, the stage sprays liquid everywhere—including the FOH position.
“It’s a pretty intense moment,” said FOH engineer Vincent Casamatta. “There’s no way I could stay at the console and not get me and the console soaked.” Casamatta’s answer has been to stage a full-on retreat from the FOH position, but that doesn’t mean the DiGiCo SD10 there gets abandoned.
Instead, Casamatta and FOH systems tech Dan Bluhm quickly pull a tarp over the desk and get out of harm’s way, taking over the desk remotely via an iPad using the DiGiCo SD SC2 app.
“The only other way to do that would have been to mix from under the tarp, and you wouldn’t want to have to do that,” Casamatta said. “I have full access to the console through the app and we never miss a beat.”
