London, UK (February 22, 2016)—Motown: The Musical closed on Broadway last year after a nearly two-year run and 738 performances, but that doesn’t mean the soulful show has driven off into the sunset. Now the musical is playing in London, aided nightly by veteran sound designer Peter Hylenski’s work.
Hylenski handled sound design for the original Broadway run; that effort was nominated in 2013 for one of the last Tony Awards in the Best Sound Design of a Musical category before the honor was controversially eliminated the following year.
It was only appropriate then that when Motown went to the Shaftesbury Theatre in London’s West End, Hylenski would be on hand to create a new system for the production. He opted to build it around Meyer Sound Leopard linear sound reinforcement speakers, using 28 Leopards and six 900-LFC low-frequency control elements, all supplied by London-based Autograph Sound.
“Motown is an extremely dynamic show,” said Hylenski. “With Leopard, the low-level dialogue is crisp and articulate, while the full musical numbers have punch and clarity. Also, the 900-LFCs work perfectly with Leopard, and their compact size is an added bonus. Having a flexible building block for low frequencies opens up possibilities for dealing with the architectural challenges of many theatres we play.”
