NYC Festival Fields 23.1 Immersive System

By Ian MacDonald. Despite its relative infancy, AEG/Goldenvoice’s Panorama Festival has made a splash. New York, NY (August 10, 2017)—Despite its relative infancy, AEG/Goldenvoice’s Panorama Festival has made a splash. Not only did this year’s edition, held July 28-30 on Randall’s Island nestled between Manhattan and Queens, feature headliners like Frank Ocean, A Tribe Called Quest and Nine Inch Nails, but it also saw an innovative deployment of technology in the form of a massive immersive experience called The Lab.

Sponsored by Hewlett Packard, The Lab was a multi-room, multi-sensory experience that culminated with The Dome, a 90-foot diameter domed tent that wowed attendees with an enormous wrapped video space playing visual content by artist Android Jones. That impressive visual experience was bolstered by an L-Acoustics-based audio system provided by regional audio provider See Factor (Long Island City, NY), making use of L-Acoustics’ new immersive audio protocol, L-ISA, which was announced earlier this year. Panorama 2017 marked the protocol’s first deployment on the East Coast.

The Dome was outfitted with 90 speakers in a 23.1-channel system, composed of three rings at different heights and a peak cluster at the top of the dome. Highlights of the space-efficient system included 32 ultra-compact Kiva II line arrays and 16 ultra-compact 5XT coaxial enclosures. Also on-hand were 14 X12s and a quartet of X15 HiQs, while the low end was enforced by a full two-dozen SB28 subs. All of that was put to use by the L-ISA Processor.

“In the dome at The Lab powered by HP, our newly developed L-ISA platform and streamlined object-based workflow lent itself perfectly to create a hemispheric multi-channel audio environment, which seamlessly matched and enhanced the spectacular visuals projected inside the dome,” said Laurent Vaissie, chief executive officer, USA & Canada, L-Acoustics. “Although the dome was quite challenging acoustically, the sonic landscape was perfectly controlled through 90 L-Acoustics enclosures and the audience could be heard raving and gasping about the immersive experience.”

With the ability to control L-ISA directly from an array of DiGiCo consoles, the L-Acoustics engineering team and See Factor were able to seamlessly integrate with the HP workstations that powered the experience. Also in the HP area, See Factor provided four L-Acoustics Arcs II speakers and a pair of SB18 subs for the HP Lounge

See Factor likewise outfitted the Parlor Stage with some serious hardware, providing Avid Venue Profile consoles at both FOH and monitors, and an additional DiGiCo SD8 desk at FOH. PA for the Parlor Stage included four stacks of four L-Acoustics K2s, along with four Karas used for front fills and a dozen KS28 subs. Rear PA, used only for DJs, included a pair of K2 stacks, four boxes high, and a trio of SB28 subs. Monitors at the Parlor Stage were tackled using 16 L-Acoustics 115XT HIQ wedges, supplemented by a pair of SB28s and three Kara boxes per side.
