Powering Super Bowl Sunday

An annual mix of pageantry, promotion and performances, the Super Bowl reaches global audiences like nothing else, and this year’s 50th Anniversary edition delivered everything the masses could want and more (unless they were Carolina Panthers fans). One of the keys to making that happen was a portable audio system that could roll on and off the field perimeter at a moment’s notice, all powered by Powersoft amplifiers.

Santa Clara, CA (February 22, 2016)—An annual mix of pageantry, promotion and performances, the Super Bowl reaches global audiences like nothing else, and this year’s 50th Anniversary edition delivered everything the masses could want and more (unless they were Carolina Panthers fans). One of the keys to making that happen was a portable audio system that could roll on and off the field perimeter at a moment’s notice, all powered by Powersoft amplifiers.

Packing into Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, 71,000 people watched the game and surrounding performances, like Lady Gaga singing “The Star Spangled Banner” and a high-energy halftime performance that included Coldplay, Beyoncé and Bruno Mars belting their hits.

ATK Audiotek (Valencia, CA) once again provided audio within the stadium for the pre-game, halftime and post-game portions of the event, using a fleet of 18 custom-designed mobile speaker carts.

Each one was outfitted with four to five JBL VerTec 4889 large-format line array loudspeakers—84 in total—and two JBL VerTec 4880A dual 18-inch subwoofers, totaling 36. All of that was powered by Powersoft K10 amplifiers, which drew power exclusively from generators. FOH engineer Toby Francis (Kiss, Ariana Grande), who tackled FOH duties for Bruno Mars’ halftime segment, noted, “The K10s really held it all together. The low end was tight as it could be and the overall response was really good for a stadium like this.”

The stadium PA system was augmented with additional low-end reinforcement for mid-game music bumpers, referee announcements, and announcer calls. “When the speakers were not out there [on the field] and we were in game mode, they wanted subwoofers to make game-time more exciting, so we had eight locations of Powersoft subs set up permanently against the audience wall on the field,” said Pat Baltzell, sound designer and FOH mixer for ATK Audiotek. “These helped us get an extra half-octave of audio, reaching the super-low frequencies, between 25 and 35 Hz.”

The ATK team positioned M-Force powered subwoofers with 30-inch cones against the audience wall on the field, four on each side, in evenly spaced intervals. Each cabinet was powered by a single Powersoft K10 amplifier. “The M-force and K10 combination delivered exactly the low end we were looking for, perfectly complementing the house PA,” said Kirk Powell, Systems Designer of ATK Audiotek.
