RCF Fills Massive Mosque with Sound

The massive new Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Mosque in the United Arab Emirates, is an impressive 39,000-square-meter HOW that holds up to 28,000 worshipers, but it is also a considerable audio challenge.

Fujairah, UAE (March 15, 2016)—The massive new Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Mosque in the United Arab Emirates, is an impressive 39,000-square-meter HOW that holds up to 28,000 worshipers, but it is also a considerable audio challenge.

Featuring 65 domes, six minarets (more than 80 meters tall), 24 carat gold-plated accessories and precious hand-woven carpets, it is the second largest mosque in the UAE and it was built using marble and fine materials from all over the world. Those same impressive features, however, make for a facility that is extremely reverberant. With that in mind, RCF engineers were brought in with the aim of achieving intelligibility throughout the venue while being as visually unobtrusive as possible.

The team’s solution centered around RCF’s VSA 2050 multi-amplified digitally steerable columns, used to minimize energy dispersion towards the ceiling and the side wall concavities, thus reducing the reverberant field. The columns’ white color also integrated well into the HOW’s interior design.

RCF’s L2406-T three-way column speakers, also in white, are used as delay lines and sound reinforcement in smaller areas inside the mosque. The audio system also comprises CS 6940 column speakers, which have been installed in hallways and small secondary rooms, and P 4228 outdoor speakers used in the mosque’s main courtyard. RCF’s horns (HD 410 and H 6045) were installed on the minarets. The installation and commissioning were carried out by Oasis Enterprises.

More than 40,000 people visited the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Mosque when it officially opened in September 2015, for the Islamic festivity of Eid-al Adha.
