New York (June 13, 2011)—At Sunday night’s 2011 Tony Awards, Broadway sound designers Brian Ronan and Christopher Shutt won the Best Sound Design of a Musical and Play Awards, respectively.
Ronan, who won for The Book of Mormon, was nominated twice in this year’s Best Sound Design of a Musical, as he was also up for the revival of Anything Goes. The win came on the heels of taking home the 2011 Drama Desk Award Outstanding Sound Design in a Musical for Anything Goes, and the two nominations marked his second and third Tony nominations, following his nomination in the same category for 2009’s Next To Normal.
Shutt’s win for Best Sound Design of a Play, for War Horse, was his first nomination for a Tony, but came just weeks after taking home a 2011 Drama Desk Award Special Award for the play.
Both The Book of Mormon and War Horse won their respective Best Musical and Best Play awards. Mormon had been nominated in 14 categories, winning in eight, while War Horse took home all five categories for which it was nominated.
