New York, NY (June 10, 2013)—Last night saw the annual Tony Awards take place in New York City, celebrating the best and brightest of the Broadway season. The musical Kinky Boots with songs by new wave diva Cyndi Lauper took home the Best Musical award but it also landed John Shivers the Best Sound Design of a Musical trophy. Meanwhile, Leon Rothenberg won Best Sound Design of a Play for his work on The Nance, a drama that won two additional awards.
Shivers’ win for Kinky Boots marked his first Tony Award nomination. His past credits include Leap of Faith (2012), Bonnie and Clyde (2011) and Sister Act (2011). Meanwhile, The Nance was Rothenberg’s second Tony nomination; his previous Broadway credits include The Heiress (2012), A Streetcar Named Desire (2012) and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone (Tony nomination, 2009).
Other nominees for this year’s Best Sound Design of a Play award included John Gromada (The Trip to Bountiful); Mel Mercier (The Testament of Mary); and Peter John Still and Marc Salzberg (Golden Boy).
Nominees for Best Sound Design of a Musical included Jonathan Deans and Garth Helm (Pippin); Peter Hylenski (Motown The Musical); and Nevin Steinberg (Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella).
