DIGI TV Mobiltelevision of Stuttgart, Germany has become the first company to install Soundcraft’s new Vi6 digital audio console into an outside broadcast vehicle (OBV). Supplied by Audio Pro Heilbronn, the Vi6 was installed in DIGI TV’s OB3, a 16-camera OBV that is regularly used to cover sports events for German television. OB3 is more than 50 feet long and its width of nearly 12 feet is capable of housing four separate production rooms: audio control, video production, video control and an editing/VTR studio.
“This van has been booked for broadcasting a lot of skiing events [Nordische Kombination, Skispringen] for the two major TV networks in Germany [ARD and ZDF] during the winter months,” explains engineer Michael Lindermeir (pictured). “Working daily with the console, there were two aspects of operation that I found most convincing. Firstly, the reliability and stable performance of the system during our on-air productions. Secondly, the flexible, quick and easy handling made possible by the Vistonics II concept. The Vi6 proves to me every day that it’s a well thought through concept.”
OB3 is one of three large vehicles operated by DIGI TV from its base in Stuttgart. Founded in 1987, the company offers recording and transmission services in digital 16:9 format to most of Germany’s TV broadcasters and those in neighboring countries. Its vehicles are used across a wide variety of events, from sporting competitions to live entertainment, game shows and concerts, especially classical music.
