Music fans in the greater Los Angeles area were recently treated to two intimate events as a part of the Hal Leonard Master Class series, featuring legendary engineers Bob Clearmountain and Dave Pensado, with Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.

On October 9, Clearmountain hosted “Getting Great Drum Sounds in the Studio” at Apogee headquarters and studio in Santa Monica to record a session with Chad Smith, while also giving a small studio audience insight into his recording process. Over a 40-plus year career, Clearmountain has recorded with the best in music, including Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Paul McCartney and many others.

The audience was treated to Smith and Clearmountain explaining their respective setup processes for recording, with Smith giving the audience a look at his warmup process and Clearmountain giving insight on how to ensure sounds and levels are set properly. The discussion was moderated by Mix’s Barry Rudolph. Following the recording, Bob and Chad held both a Q&A session and a Meet & Greet for attendees.
