MusicXPC Professional C5, C5x

MusicXPC introduces the latest in its Small Form Factor line of media production computers: the Windows-based Professional C5 (pictured; $1,449) and Professional C5x ($1,749), designed by industry veteran and musician Les Bateman. Both computers are configured to handle dozens of audio tracks, effects and virtual instruments with ease and include FireWire, USB 2, PCI and Gigabit LAN connectivity.

The Professional C5 features an Intel Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.13 GHz on a 1,066MHz front-side bus. The machine comes with 1GB of DDR2 667MHz (dual channel) custom-built RAM, an 18x dual-layer DVD-RW and two separate 7,200 rpm hard drives (250GB and 320GB, respectively) providing a total of 570 GB of storage. The drives also have a 16MB cache for fast throughput and high track counts.

The Professional C5x features a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor on a 1,066MHz bus and ships with 2 GB of DDR2 667MHz (dual channel) custom-built RAM. In addition, the C5x provides a 256MB DDR2 PCI-E 16x dual channel graphics card (dual DVI/VGA). It supports dual-link DVI, DVI-I, TV-Out and HDTV.

Both computers also feature heat-pipe technology for quiet computer operation, which ferries heat away from the CPU without using the large noisy fans that usually reside about the processor.

The C5 and C5x come with a comprehensive backup/restore system, which allows the user to restore the computer to its factory settings after a catastrophic failure, a drive crash or a re-formatting. MusicXPC states that the units’ original factory state is stored in an invisible part of the main hard drive.
