The New Eleven: Hugo Nicolson Mixes Ocean’s Twelve

Mix engineer Hugo Nicolson handled the surround mix for the newly released Warner Bros. flick, Ocean’s Twelve at Cherokee Studios in Los Angeles, using, among other items, a newly purchased SSL XLogic Multichannel Compressor purchased from Guitar Center Pro.

“The XLogic Compressor is designed from the ground up for surround mixing,” says Nicolson. “In the past, I would have had to employ multiple stereo compressors, and that situation was always complicated and took more time. When I would go back to recall the mix, I was always dealing with resetting all those little buttons and knobs and that was a drag. With the XLogic, everything is right there in front of you and the settings are easy to recall.

“Since I’ve been using this compressor, I’ve actually gotten better at mixing 5.1,” states Nicolson. “I’ve found that I’ve been spreading the sound around to all the speakers a lot more, creating a richer sonic environment for the action in the picture with the XLogic.”
